Description:

Oak Camp is located a few miles up the Chorro Grande Trail off of Hwy 33 in the Ventura Backcountry. This camp is outside the wilderness but still has a wilderness feel to it. The camp has two spacious sites, each with a fire ring under the shade of a thick oak canopy. Seasonal water is available from the nearby creek. Water can often, but not always, be found a short distance upstream, even when the creek appears to be dry from camp.

Surveyor Name:Chris Houlberg - Scoutmaster Troop119
Camp Description:Crossed four creeks with water flowing in them on the way into camp.  Upon arriving we found the first two campsites in good, clean condition.  Unfortunately, the third and largest campsite firepit was in bad condition.  All the stones were piled up over the grill and pit area along with ash from many campfires.  We, Ventura Troop 119 and Santa Paula Troop 304 removed the stones, relocated all the ash away from the stream, the camp and the trail.  We then rebuilt the firepit and cleaned the grill (see photos).  Part of the rebuild was to place flat stones in strategic locations for frying pans and other cooking gear.  That third campsite is now in great shape.
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:Flow rate is great. Lots of clean, clear water flowing past camp.
Weather Conditions:Clear sky. Day temperature in 60s. Night temperature in 40s.

Camp Description:This camp is spacious and pristine.  No micro trash, beautiful coverage from Oaks.  Plenty of room to spread out if you are with a group.  ONly a short hike from trail head; just shy of two miles.  Puts you in great position if you want to continue on to Reyes Peak in the morning.  Though we were there on a weekend, and this site is near the trailhead, we did not see many folks using the trail, and no one else was at the camp.

Camp Description:Very pretty campsite with plenty of good, flat tent space and three fire rings/stoves alongside creek.
Well worth the (relatively easy) hike in.
Bring bug dope or veil as the flies were very pesky (but only at the campsite).
Wear long leggings to protect against the brambles.

Trail is passable, slightly overgrown, and not recommended for dogs as it is full of fox tails.
Pay careful attention following trail as the undergrowth tended to disguise the trail at several stream crossings, none of which were well marked.

Water Source:Dry
Water Source Details:Everything is bone dry.
