Nettle Springs Camp Survey - 09-29-2023 - by Drew Helms

Date: 09-29-2023
Surveyor Name:Drew Helms
Camp Description:The campground was empty (it was a weekday) and the infrastructure is in good shape.  There is typical camp litter (lots of cigarette butts and a few .410 shells).  There were a very unpleasant amount of gnats.  This is ok, but it wasn't very fun to have a cloud of them follow me into my truck for the ride back out after my hike. Haha.

There are also a lot of bees at the last little creek crossing into the camp gathered around the dwindling water in the roadway itself.  They aren't aggressive, but do roll up your windows as you make that little creek crossing into camp and drive through their collecting area.

High clearance vehicles with good tires probably necessary, there are still 3-4 wet creek crossings on Apache Canyon Road, and it may be raining again soon.

Water Source Details:There's some water, but not a lot.

Camp Description:What a shame that people would come and trash this camp, shoot up the outhouse, you name it. This is still an important spot for backpackers through hiking longer routes. Water is reliable.

Camp Description:Pleasant weekend there with temperatures in the low 70s during the day and upper 40s overnight. We only ran into one other vehicle the whole weekend. Dry conditions but the spring near the campsite had flowing water.

Nettle Springs Camp Survey - 04-08-2022 - by Christopher P. Lord
Link: Nettle Springs Camp
Date: 04-08-2022
Surveyor Name:Christopher P. Lord
Camp Description:According to MPRD this camp is open. What it lacks in onsite amenities it makes up for with unique geology and solitude. Spring pipe is flowing downstream from camp. Alternatively one can still find moisture along Toad Springs 22W01 at Upper Nettle Spring. Apache Canyon Rd is easily passible with high clearance vehicle and not part of the MVUM seasonal closure.
