Description:

JULY 2016 - DUE TO HAZARD TREES FIGUEROA CAMPGROUND IS CLOSED

Nestled in a grove of beautiful red Manzanita and a variety of oaks and pines, lies Figueroa Campground with its 33 campsites fully equipped with fire rings, pedestal barbeques and a picnic table at every site. Hard packed soil makes several of the sites accessible to the three, double vault, wheelchair accessible bathrooms.  Figueroa Campground can accommodate up to 25 foot trailers and RVs, although hook-ups are not available. Three dumpsters are located on Figueroa Mountain Road for convenient trash disposal.

Figueroa Campground serves as a centralized location to various trailheads, including the Davy Brown/Fir Canyon and Ballard Trails. It also provides a short drive to the beautiful Pino Alto Day Use Area/Nature Trail and Cumbre Day Use Area, located on Figueroa Lookout Road. On this road you will also find the Figueroa Lookout and its’ majestic view of the San Rafael Wilderness.

During spring, Figueroa Campground is an ideal place to camp while you enjoy the magnificent wildflower displays that Figueroa Mountain has to offer. This is also the home of numerous spring migrating birds, such as the exquisite western tanager, who breeds and raises its’ young on Figueroa Mountain until August.

From the middle of August to the end of September, this campground is very popular with hunters during the annual deer season. Nights are often cold, even during the summer months, therefore, jackets and sweaters are recommended. Hot summer months also bring out gnats and deer flies, so don’t forget your insect repellant.

Potable water is not available.

Nearest place for purchasing supplies is Los Olivos, located 13 miles down Figueroa Mountain Road, across from 154. Neast place for gasoline/diesel is in Santa Ynez. From 154, east 5 miles to Highway 246. Make a right on Highway 246 and the first gas station will be located approximately 2 miles on Highway 246.

Los Padres Announces Closures on Santa Lucia Ranger District
GOLETA, CA, July 8, 2016…

Los Padres National Forest officials today announced the closure of the recreation sites in the Figueroa Recreation Area due to concerns related to dead and dying hazardous trees that pose a safety risk to visitors. The temporary closure is effective immediately.
This temporary closure includes Figuerora Campground, Pino Alto Day Use Area, Figuerora Lookout, Cumbre Day Use Area and Forest Service Road 8N16 (Lookout Road). These areas will remain closed until the public safety risk is mitigated by cutting the hazardous trees.

The effects of rising temperatures, extended drought, and aggressive bark beetle infestations have created a tree mortality epidemic across California. Since 2010, an estimated 40 million trees have been lost. These standing dead trees have created hazards across the forest and surrounding communities and campgrounds, and present an unnecessary risk to visitors and employees along roads, trails and utility corridors. They also pose a significant threat to communities and fire responders if a wildfire occurs in these high-hazard areas.

“We are temporarily closing these areas until we can safely eliminate the risk these hazard trees pose to visitors as well as our employees,” said Santa Lucia District Ranger Nathan Rezeau. “We appreciate the public’s cooperation and understanding while we take the necessary steps to safely remove the dangerous trees.”
Members of the public are reminded that they should always call ahead to the district office for the latest conditions and consult the National Weather Service for current weather forecasts.
