The La Brea fire raged through this portion of the Forest in August 2009. Most of the roads and trails were closed after the fire to allow the vegetation to regrow. The huge winter storms of 2011 basically destroyed the La Brea Canyon Rd and forced the Forest Service to close this area to vehicle travel. While the road down through Rattlesnake Canyon to the La Brea Creek used to be open, it is now essentially a permanent closure. If you have plans to explore the lower La Brea Creek area, you'll be parking your vehicle and hiking or mountain biking down from here.
There are two locked gates and a cattleguard.
