Description:

Ventana Camp is the first camp along the Pine Ridge Trail coming up from Big Sur Station.  It requires an extremely steep descent from the Pine Ridge Trail down the Ventana Camp Trail.  The camp is set along the Big Sur River near the confluence of the Ventana Creek.  Ventana Camp sees much less use than the other nearby camps along the Pine Ridge Trail.

Camp Description:The site was not particularly crowded and river was flowing. Plenty of trees for shade and hanging a hammock. We saw a juvenile rattlesnake stretched across the trail on the way down, so stay vigilant for them.
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:Plenty of water with a good flow. Not a raging river, but definitely a steady stream to stock up on water

Ventana Camp Survey - 09-04-2015 - by Amber Loewy

Surveyor Name:Amber Loewy
Camp Description:There are 5 distinct campsites on the south side of the river, with plenty of extra spots to pitch a tent even if the sites are occupied. All the sites are large enough to fit a group of 4-6 tents, plus have a fire ring (that can't be used if there are campfire restrictions). There is a "toilet" on the south side of the river. See pictures, don't expect privacy if there are other people coming down the trail to camp. On the north side of the river there are 3 more sites with fire rings, but no toilet. If you hammock camp, there are plenty of trees but most are far apart so make sure you have an extra 25' of rope or long tree straps. There is poison oak EVERYWHERE; on the trail, in the camp, etc... To cross the river, there are some downed trees that make a bridge so you don't have to get wet, but it's easier to wear sandals or just cross barefoot, especially if you are carrying a pack across. The river is inches deep so walking across is no problem. Down river from the camp there is a beautiful swimming area with big boulders to sun on and a down tree crossing the lagoon area. No pictures, but you can see it on the satellite map. The descent to camp is about a mile from the trail marker, so 6 miles total hike from Big Sur Station Trailhead to Ventana Camp. The trail was narrow but clear.
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:The water out of the Big Sur River was fabulous, filtered of course, but runs beautifully clear and tastes great.
Weather Conditions:Clear skies, afternoon wind gusts, cool evenings
