Description:

Pinon Pine covered Caballo Campground is located about a half mile north of Noroeste Road along Quatal Canyon Road (9N27).  9N27 is an unimproved road which can be difficult for some vehicles.  Caballo is Spanish for horse and may reflect that the potrero at the camp was used as a horse pasture.  Reservations can be made at www.Recreation.gov.

NOTE: Caballo is closed seasonally during the winter closures from November through May.  Check with Mt. Pinos Ranger District before planning a visit (661) 245-3731

Caballo Campground Survey - 07-21-2021 - by Anonymous Surveyor

Camp Description:Access to campground is by way of a poorly maintained single-lane 4WD road that winds along the side of hills.  Backing-up with a trailer along the trail would be extremely difficult and hazardous. I recommend against attempting access using anything but a 4WD vehicle.  Campground has four sites.  One is nicely shaded by Oaks - good spot to relax in a hammock. The others are in the open.  Weather was hot and very dry (very hot exposed to the sun). Pit toilet was clean and appeared lightly used.  No water source was present - must be carried in.  Garbage must be packed out -  there is no dumpster.  Despite a warning of bears, none showed up.
Water Source:Dry
Water Source Details:Conditions were very dry with no water source.
Weather Conditions:Daytime hot - Eighties-Nineties; Warm evening.
Caballo Campground Survey - 02-27-2021 - by Oh Three

Camp Description:Pleasant short hike up from the closed gate. This campground is on 9N27 north of 95, which is just west of where "Quatal Canyon Road" hits the 95. The 9N27 dirt road was smooth, no problem for a car if/when the gate is opened. Caballo has four campsites, each with a picnic table and firepit, two east and two west of the road. Each side has one site in the sun, and one in the shade, in fact in the snow today. Caballo has a nice new (locked) outhouse, Dirt road 9N27 is a 30 minute drive from I-5 and Frazier Park, to 9N27. No reservations needed.
