Big Spring - Alamo Mountain Survey - 06-13-2020 - by Tim Cameron
Link: Big Spring - Alamo Mountain
Date: 06-13-2020
Surveyor Name:Tim Cameron
Camp Description:Big Spring is still viable as of mid-June 2020. There is a small but steady trickle from the hose feeding the horse trough. The trough is full of stagnant, green, buggy water. It would take a long time to fill up from the hose, but there are currently several seeps in the area which can be enlarged with a scoop to provide delicious clean water.
Water Source:Flowing
Water Source Details:Horse trough is full of stagnant water fed by a hose (just a trickle) but there are other seeps nearby
Weather Conditions:80's during the day, clear and sunny

Big Spring - Alamo Mountain Survey - 06-15-2019 - by Oh Three

Surveyor Name:Oh Three
Camp Description:Big Spring is down the spur road right before you reach the loop road around Alamo.

Watch out. Steep spur road! And it's really starting to get an erosion rut across it. Consider parking on the top, and walking down to the springs. Even before this current erosion rut started, I've had trouble getting a "city" SUV (Honda CR-V) back up the hill.

Big Spring is just stagnant water. What happened? This horse trough was always overflowing, with water spurting up out of the tubing. Now both tubes are dry, and the stagnant water left in the trough is just breeding mosquitoes.

There is an active muddy seep 20' up the road. If needed, dig a hole, let it fill up, and FILTER!

Assuming you're in a car, drive 1/4 mile west, towards Dutchman campground, on the Alamo Loop road, and there's another rock covered horse trough on the uphill side of the loop road, which is flowing. It's good.

Worst case, if you're up on Alamo Mountain and out of water, drive down to the Piru Creek ford, and FILTER Piru Creek water. Boil it. Iodine. Maybe add bleach. If you think I'm overreacting, look at all the used diapers and other trash left behind there by the crowds at Gold Hill Campground.

PS - don't tell anyone, but there's an excellent gypsy camp located just east of Big Spring, with an awesome north view. Just avoid this area during deer hunting season. Zone D13. Hunters camp on every bend in the road. Dawn and dusk sound like you're in Fallujah. Wear your International Orange hats!
